A dead hot tub is one of the hardest things to get rid of yourself. It's too big for the city's pickup programs, too heavy to move in one piece without equipment, and usually sitting somewhere awkward. We've removed one ourselves, and here's what the job really involves.
Step 1: Kill the power, safely
Most hot tubs run on a dedicated 240-volt circuit. The power has to be shut off at the breaker and the disconnect before anyone touches it, and if the wiring is being removed or capped, that's a job for a licensed electrician. Don't skip this.
Step 2: Drain it
A hot tub can hold hundreds of gallons. Drain it fully, ideally a day or two before removal so it has time to dry out. Pay attention to where the water goes. Treated water shouldn't be sent into a storm drain.
Step 3: Decide whole or in pieces
If there's a wide, clear path to the street and enough people, a hot tub can sometimes come out whole on its side. In most Philly back yards, with narrow side paths, gates, and steps, it has to be cut apart. That means cutting through the cabinet, shell, and foam insulation into pieces that can be carried.
Step 4: Haul and dispose
A broken-down hot tub is a mix of acrylic or fiberglass, foam, wood or composite cabinet panels, pumps, and metal. Metal parts can often be recycled as scrap. The rest goes to a transfer station. It's a full load, and it isn't something you can bring to a city drop-off center in a car.
Step 5: Clean up
The foam insulation inside most hot tubs crumbles when it's cut, so expect a mess. A good removal leaves the site clear, not covered in foam bits.
What about the base?
If the tub sat on a concrete pad, the pad usually stays unless you arrange for demolition. Pavers or a wood deck under the tub may need repair after years of weight and moisture.
Signs it's time
- It hasn't run in years and the cover is falling apart.
- It's holding standing water, which breeds mosquitoes.
- You want the yard or patio back.
- You're selling the house and it's a buyer turn-off.
