Estate cleanouts in Philadelphia: where to start

Clearing out a parent's or relative's home is one of the hardest jobs there is, emotionally and physically. There's no single right way to do it, but a little structure makes it much more manageable.

First, don't rush the important stuff

Before anything leaves the house, look for:

  • Wills, deeds, titles, insurance policies, and financial statements
  • Keys, safe combinations, and passwords
  • Jewelry, cash, and collectibles, which often turn up in odd places like coat pockets, books, and freezer bags
  • Photos, letters, and family keepsakes

If there's an estate process underway, check with the executor or attorney before removing anything of value.

Agree on a plan as a family

Set a date for family members to claim items. Use colored tape or stickers to mark what each person is keeping. It avoids hard conversations later.

Sort into four groups

  1. Keep: claimed by family.
  2. Sell: through an estate sale company, consignment, or online.
  3. Donate: usable furniture, clothes, and housewares.
  4. Dispose: everything else.

Watch for the special items

  • Old paint and chemicals go to a hazardous waste event.
  • TVs and computers have to be recycled; see the electronics guide.
  • Appliances with refrigerant need proper handling; see the appliance guide.
  • Medications should go to a pharmacy or police take-back program, not the trash.

Know the city's limits

For a full house, the city's options add up slowly: two bulk items a day at a drop-off center, four per bulk pickup appointment, and weekly curbside limits. For most estates, a hauler is the practical choice for the "dispose" pile.

Pace yourself

Work one room at a time, starting with the easiest rooms like the kitchen or linen closet, not the bedroom. Take breaks. Bring help. It's fine to take longer than you planned.

How we help

We handle the heavy part: furniture, basement and attic contents, and everything left after the family has taken what they want. We'll set aside anything that looks important or personal so you can check it before it goes. Reach out when you're ready, and not before.
